4 Kid-Friendly Hiking and Biking Trails in Ruston
Sometimes you just have to look away from the screen, get out from behind the desk, and spend some quality time with the family.
An inexpensive and fun way to do that is to go to a local park and explore the beautiful foliage around Ruston! Here are 4 perfect and kid-friendly hiking and biking spots in our city.
1. Rock Island Greenway
Enjoy a unique and new trail to the Ruston area. In the 1860s, these trails were a railroad connecting Arkansas to Louisiana and beyond. Now they are perfect for connecting your young ones with the beauty and serenity of the outdoors.
The path is smooth enough to bike as well and the entire path is around half a mile. Remember, it does not circle back so be prepared for an easy mile trek. But the experience is well worth it!
2. Huckleberry Trails
Hiking Huckleberry Trails is an easy, fun and unique experience. Children can learn about types of trees by using the plaques stationed throughout the main trail.
They can explore the hidden paths that wind in and out from the main circular track that is a quarter of a mile long. And if they get tired, you can take them to the straight track through the center of it all that leads into small pavilions and a jungle gym.
This trail is a perfect introductory hike because you can alter the length of the trek depending on your child's comfort level. Plus, there are many pit stops that can be made along the way as well!
3. Cook Park
Cook Park is mountain biking heaven for kids and adults alike. From the wide walking paths that your beginner can get their biking bearings on, to the steep winding slopes that can turn in to mini thrill ride, there is something for everyone.
When they get tired, take a break, hang out, and have lunch under the pavilion. Then let the kids wear themselves out on the two jungle gyms while you break a sweat on the exercise circuit around the track.
4. Lincoln Parish Park
Start with a scenic lap around the pond with a bike, stroller, or on foot! Then head through the woods down one of the many paths that crisscross throughout the park.
Remember to grab a trail map when you get there! It only costs two dollars a day per person, and toddlers two and under get in for free. Get out and go see the most beautiful natural setting Ruston parks have to offer! Don’t forget to pack a blanket and lunch for a perfect picnic on the green fields or out on the bank.
The Experience Ruston team is excited for you to come and see the countless opportunities for outdoor adventures! Be sure to share photos with us using #RustonLA! For more info on parks and outdoor areas in Lincoln Parish, click here.
